How to Create an Interactive Prototype using Figma

Perhaps, you’ve heard of Figma, or you’ve already been using it for UI/UX design. Figma is truly a great tool for designing beautiful and interactive prototypes. This blog will lead you through the process of creating your first interactive prototype using Figma.

Step One: Set Up A New Project

After creating an account and logging in, you can start a new project by clicking the ‘+’ sign. You can choose to design from a blank canvas or import some templates to make your work easier. The decision is yours.

Step Two: Design Your Frames

In Figma, screens are commonly known as frames. From the menu on the left, select the frame tool and choose the device screen you want to design for, such as Desktop, iPhone, or Android. You can design as many frames as your prototype needs. Add, remove, duplicate, and even layer your frames as required.

Step Three: Add Objects to Your Frame

On the far right side, you will find the Design tab. From this dashboard, you can add objects like shapes, texts, and images onto your frames. Each of these elements is highly customizable. Want to have a round button instead of a rectangular one? That’s a piece of cake!

Step Four: Create Interactions between Frames

Interactions are the key to transforming your design frames into a lively prototype. After you select an object, choose the Prototype tab and click ‘+’ in the Interactions section. Then, you can set up your first interaction by choosing its trigger and action.

Step Five: Test Your Prototype

After setting up the interactions, your prototype is ready to be tested. Click on the ‘Present’ button on the top-right corner and interact with your prototype as if you were the user. If there’s something you don’t like or anything that feels off, simply go back and tweak it until you’re satisfied.

Now take a moment to pat yourself on the back. You’ve just created your first interactive prototype!

Tips and tricks:

  • Use layers to organize your design elements.
  • Import icons and images to enhance your design.
  • Make use of Figma’s collaborative feature to work with your team in real-time.
  • Use components to create design elements you’ll want to reuse. This can save time and maintain consistency across your design.
